In this episode, you will hear three therapists have a conversation about how mental health/illness stigma manifests itself in daily practice with clients.  Elisa, Monica, and Cristal all have experience working with victims of crime, Latinxs, children, and trauma survivors.  All these vulnerable populations experience stigma differently.  Elisa speaks about how victims of crime experience stigma.  She talks about her experiences with male clients and children.  Monica talks about her experiences with curanderismo as mental health treatment... as well as the shortage of male therapists in her area (and everywhere else in the US, we think).  And all three talk about their own history with mental health diagnoses and treatment.

Therapist Horror Stories

Monday Oct 23, 2023

Monday Oct 23, 2023

In honor of SPOOKY SEASON we asked our listeners and community for their horror stories. We didn't want the PARANORMAL kind, we wanted the ones that left our peers and colleagues in shock and terror for different reasons. As you will see, in this episode, the horror ranges from kinda scary to outright terrifying.
Elisa Dobler, LCSW-S and myself, Cristal Acosta, LPC-S, NCC, CCTP read submissions and react to therapist horror stories. We even tell some spooky stories of our own.

"Empathy without boundaries is a path to self-destruction." Have you heard this saying before?
For healers, counselors, therapists, social workers, this statement is so heavy and true! Empathy and compassion are main tenets of our work with other humans and if we don't set boundaries for others and ourselves in different areas of our lives, this can lead to a place of resentment and burnout.
Cristal Acosta, private practice owner and therapist of over a decade who has worked in many settings, gives therapists 5 ways to set boundaries.
