Okay future therapists, in the last episode you heard Myra Garcia, LCSW and Myself, a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Board Certified Therapist, talk about what to GENERALLY expect when becoming a therapist.
The plan is to explore the different kinds of mental health professionals in this LARGE and GROWING community from the bottom up...meaning, I'll talk to therapy students, interns, graduate level interns/associates, and fully licensed professionals about how they become or are in the process of becoming THERAPISTS.
This week we are moving up the ladder and discovering how Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists are made.
We start with two Associate level MFT's, Mishka Kimball, AMFT and Luis Cornejo, AMFT. Below is some must-have info about my two guests!
Luis Cornejo, M.S, AMFT (Founder & Editor-in-Chief of PsychoSocial)
Luis is an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist who graduated from Long Beach State University (CSULB) with a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology (2015). He also has a Bachelors degree in Child and Adolescent Development with an emphasis in Public Policy from San Francisco State University (2011). Luis has over 9 years of experience working with children and families both in education and mental health. After graduating with his M.S at CSULB, Luis received the California MFT consortium award for his achievements and commitment to community mental health. As a result Luis worked at Children’s Institute (CII), a non-profit community based agency in Los Angeles for 1 year to fulfill the award requirements. During his time at CII, Luis provided in home and in school based therapy for children and families. Currently, Luis works for Instituto Familiar de la Raza, Inc. a non-profit agency in San Francisco, CA providing mental health consultation in early head start programs and SFUSD pre-schools through their early intervention program.
His therapeutic interests include working with Trauma, the LGBTQ community, Children, Families, Couples, and POC. His personal interests include; Films, Reading, Writing, Art, Travelling, Disney, and Food. He is also a recipient of the California State Stipend award (2015). PsychoSocial is part of Luis' dedication to mental health and an example of his passion to educate others. PsychoSocial is a multimedia platform founded by Luis Cornejo, AMFT and Co-Founded by Katherine Dominguez, ASW. PsychoSocial is designed to promote mental health awareness, knowledge, and advocacy as well as fight to de-stigmatize mental illness. Through the use of written text, video, social media, and audio, PsychoSocial hopes to create dialogue and support for mental health awareness. PsychoSocial strives to highlight issues impacting the LGBTQ, POC, and other disenfranchised groups. PsychoSocial was also designed to highlight an array of topics impacting mental health which includes creativity, culture, and current events.

Welcome to "Through the Eyes of a Therapist"! This is the podcast that’s all about mental health! I am your host, creator, and editor of this podcast, Cristal Martinez Acosta, LPC, NCC! I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and Board Certified Mental Health Therapist.
This episode contains a very special interview with a person who I admire very much! Richard Salcido is an LPC-Supervisor who also lives, works, and plays in El Paso, Texas. He was THE supervisor who helped me launch my career after graduate school and oversaw my completion of 3,000 hours of therapy practice to become fully licensed. He has trained many interns over the years and helped shape the next generation of therapists. He has been a therapist since the 1970s and has a great perspective on mind and body health. In this episode he gives us information on the 5 Domains of Healthy Living. Richard will walk us through each domain, giving us tips and things to try along the way.
And Yes, I asked if there will be a book.
We got a maybe on that one....but YES to a powerpoint presentation.
I hope to continue to make my first post-grad supervisor and mentor proud! Thank you Mr. Salcido for the push you gave me to launch my counseling career.

In this short episode, or "mini-sode" as I like to call it, I give a few tips on how to gently confront a person about going to see a therapist. It's easier said than done...but what is worse...feeling a bit embarrased about bringing it up? OR...Never saying anything about it but regret it later?
In the episode I talk about my resources page, which can be found at: www.throughtheeyesofatherapist.podbean.com (THREE LITTLE BARS AT THE TOP/DROPDOWN MENU)
